Assam

Gateway state

The Brahmaputra runs through everything here, rhino grassland, tea country, river islands and gibbon forest. It's where most journeys begin, and a reward in its own right.

The practical questions, answered.

Access & permits

Permits, timing and which state to start with, in plain language, before you commit to anything.

What's the best time to visit Northeast India?
October to April is the main dry-season window across most of the region, clear skies, comfortable days. Meghalaya's green season (June–September) is dramatic and lush if you don't mind rain. Kaziranga opens roughly November–April, and Nagaland's Hornbill Festival falls in the first week of December.
Which state should I visit first?
Meghalaya is the easiest first step, short drives, no special permit, iconic landscapes. It pairs naturally with Assam for wildlife and the river. Nagaland and Arunachal reward travellers who want more depth, distance and a slower pace.
Can I combine two or more states?
Yes, most of our longer journeys do. Assam pairs cleanly with any neighbour because Guwahati is the shared gateway. We plan realistic drive times and build in a buffer day so a combined route never feels like a race.
Do I need a permit?
It depends on the state and your nationality. Assam and Meghalaya generally need no special permit. Nagaland and Arunachal require an Inner Line Permit for Indian citizens, with additional registration or a Protected Area Permit for foreign nationals. Rules change, our permits desk handles it and confirms in writing before you travel.
How do I get here?
Most journeys begin at Guwahati (GAU), well connected to Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. Dimapur, Jorhat, Dibrugarh and the Arunachal airports serve specific routes. We arrange every transfer and internal leg from your arrival point.
Is it safe, and is solo travel welcome?
Yes on both. The states we operate in are welcoming, and small groups, vetted hosts and a 24×7 duty line make our journeys well suited to solo and solo-female travellers. We're glad to connect you with past guests first.

Nothing quite right?

We'll build the journey that fits you.

Take any of these as a starting point, or start from a blank page. Tell us the kind of days you're after, pace, interests, comfort, dates, and we'll come back with a costed preview. No obligation.

Before you choose.

Good to know
Private or small-group?
Both. Set departures run as small themed groups of no more than 10 (occasionally 12 for festival editions). Any signature route can also be run privately, and custom journeys are designed just for you, same standards of consent, comfort and safety throughout.
What's included in the price?
Prices are per person and all-inclusive of accommodation, internal transport, permits, a naturalist or cultural lead where relevant, and most meals. Flights to the gateway aren't included. Every journey shows its from-price in USD and INR up front.
Can you customise or combine states?
Yes. Use any signature journey as a starting point and we'll adapt pace, comfort and route, including combining two or more states around the shared Guwahati gateway. You'll see a costed preview before committing.
How do deposits and permits work?
You reserve with a deposit, never a full prepayment. Our permits desk arranges any Inner Line or Protected Area Permit and confirms your position in writing before you travel.
